A complete guide to selecting a night vision unit
"A night vision unit uses light amplification to enable viewing in the dark."
A night vision unit uses light amplification to enable viewing or recording of images in the dark.
There are two types of night vision, optical or digital amplification. Optical amplification uses a phosphorus sensor to amplify the light photons much like an old CRT screen. Digital captures the low light with a CCD camera and then amplifies the image to a LCD screen.
Price is a major factor in selecting a night vision unit; cheap domestic units provide adequate images over a short distance when there is a small amount of ambient light. Expensive units work in total darkness and over much greater distances.
